About HKSGI

Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong (HKSGI) is a Buddhist organisation for lay believers, based on the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin to promote peace, culture, education and to pray for the happiness of humanity and world peace. Through various discussion meetings, cultural and education exchanges and publications, we study Buddhism with the members, encourage one another and apply the Buddhist teachings in our daily lives. Our organisation has over 40 years of history in Hong Kong, with approximately 50,000 members and a total of 6 Kaikans in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories.

Soka Gakkai International (SGI) was established in Guam on 26 January 1975 and comprises of 82 affiliated members’ organisations with a membership of 13 million people, in 192 countries and territories. Members of the SGI (including members of Hong Kong) based their practice on the life philosophy of the Buddhism of Nichiren Daishonin to arrive at a common understanding that the happiness of individuals and the peace and development of the global family of humanity are closely related. The nature and scope of the activities at each affiliated members’ organisation are conducted in accordance with the local cultural and social background. SGI is also one of the non-governmental organisations (NGO) of the United Nations, which focuses on world peace and human rights.

As a result, we highly respect the culture, traditions and legislations of the local community, and encourage our members to become good citizens to contribute to the prosperity of the society. The activities we organise are all fundamentally based on the sanctity of life, whilst negating all acts of violence such as wars. For the sake of the happiness of humanity, the prosperity and peace of the world, we support the spirit of the United Nations’ Charter and are committed to assist the United Nations in maintaining world peace.

On 28 January 1961 when the third President of Soka Gakkai Daisaku Ikeda visited Hong Kong for the first time, there were 15 members from 8 households who started to practise. On 2 September 1963 the organisation was registered with the Hong Kong government as the ‘Hong Kong Soka Gakkai Buddhist Society’. On 22 January 1991, the registered name was changed to the ‘Soka Gakkai International of Hong Kong Limited’.
